This tough prickly flower grows wild in all parts of Scotland is referred to as the flower of Scotland. The enduring symbol was the National Emblem of Scotland since the reign of Alexander III in 1249-1286.
At the battle of Largs in 1263AD an ambush by invading Norsemen creeping upon the sleeping Scots warriors went horribly wrong. The raiders stood on these prickly flowers resulting in screams. This Woke the Scottish warriors from their slumber and they managed to defeated the Norseman. The flower then became the symbol that everyone could identify with.
