A Breif History of The Luckenbooth Love Brooch
The design has been with us for many centuries. It’s thought to have adopted its name from the first being sold out of locked booths in Edinburgh’s Royal Mile. They were exchanged between lovers on their betrothal. They were also used to pin them to their first child’s christening shawl. This was to protect them from evil spirits. The heart shaped design is surmounted by the crown of Mary Queen of Scots and often decorated with the Scottish Thistle. The Luckenbooth is probably one of the most romantic pieces of jewellery from Scotland’s past. Still popular today especially with romantic couples.
