The Traditional Scottish Thistle (Brooch)
This tough prickly flower grows wild in all parts of Scotland and referred to as the flower of Scotland. It’s perhaps the most enduring symbol and the National Emblem of Scotland since the reign of Alexander III in 1249-1286.
Legand has it, at the battle of Largs in 1263AD an ambush by invading Norsemen creeping upon the sleeping the Scots warriors went horribly wrong. The raiders stood on these prickly flowers resulting in screams. Awaking the Scottish warriors from their slumber they then managed to defeated the Norseman.
The flower became a symbol that everyone could identify with. It’s a reminder that their country might not be the most rich or fertile but equally it was not to be grasped lightly!
