Celtic monks, as well as those influenced by them, spread across northern Europe in the next several centuries. Scholars from the continent flocked to Ireland, Iona, Lindisfarne, and many other insular Celtic centres of learning.
The three most famous manuscripts known for their interlaced knotwork are the Book of Kell’s, Durrow, and the Lindisfarne Gospels. All products of the community that would have been in place under Adomnan’s leadership. Knots and details were beginning to take on lives of their own as standalone statements.
Examples of Celtic knotwork can be found in every century up to the present day. Although they get to be rare before the Celtic Revival of the 19th Century, by the later Middle Ages, the style was the strongest in the Scottish Highlands.
A style known as the Gaelic revival continued a tradition of stone carved interlace until the 16th century. Celtic jewellery and weapons carried the tradition through the Jacobite period. Items were still being carved in knotwork at the end of the 18th century. By this time, the style had become a self-conscious statement of cultural and political identity.
