A bookmark is a thin marking tool, commonly made of card, leather, or fabric, used to keep track of a reader’s progress in a book and allow the reader to easily return to where the previous reading session ended.
Research has done regarding the history of bookmarks. Evidence has found that there are indications of bookmarks have accompanied codices since their first emergence in the first century AD.
The earliest existing bookmark dates to the sixth century AD. Made from ornamented leather, lined with vellum on the back. Also, attached with a leather strap to the cover of a Coptic codex. These found near Sakkara, Egypt, under the ruins of the monastery, Apa Jeremiah. The earliest bookmarks remnants found in Coptic codices dating to the 1st and 11th century.

Bookmarks used in the medieval period consisted of a small parchment strip attached to the edge of folio. Modern day bookmarks are available in a wide variety of materials in a multitude of designs. Basic paper is the obvious choice but, card, to gold also and many other precious metals.
