The Celtic Brooches were decorative and practical pieces of jewellery used to attach garments together. The poorer people tended to wear simpler items that were primarily functional and made of more simple materials such as copper or pewter. The rich, however used silver, gold and other precious materials. As the brooches changed in design, they became an important Chronalogical indicator of time.

The Celtic brooches, also called the penannular brooches were closely related to the the pseudo penannular brooches. In the Roman period around 700 to 900, the brooches were associated with the highly ornate brooches made for the elites of Ireland and Scotland. When they became more popular and known as the Celtic Brooch. They continued in simple forms like the Celtic Thistle up to the 11th century.
