In Ireland and parts of Britain, Europe and Scotland, the Celts crafted the Celtic Cross. These crosses were made from stone and pre-dated Christianity. They were used by the pagans to worship the sun. The circle or nimbus at the centre of the Cross represented the Sun and was the canter of their lives.
In the 4th century AD after conquering the Celts, Constantine the Christian Roman Emperor decreed the Celtic Cross would be used to represent Christ’s victory. The conversion began of many pagans who were converted to Christianity. The Cross was then adapted by philosopher’s and the circle became the centre of Christianity. From the Middle Ages the Celtic Cross was evangelized by Irish Christian Missionaries. From the 9th through to the 12th centuries the cross became widespread throughout their use, and they were erected across the Islands and Highlands of Scotland along with other parts of Britain.
