The Highland Quaich is a shallow cup or bowl with two or more handles or Lugs, that originated in the Scottish Highlands many centuries ago. The name Quaich originates from the Scottish Gaelic word cuach, which translates into cup. A Quaich is usually a very ornate piece and will feature a great deal of illustration. Often it is in a Celtic design, including the engraved initials of the owner.
Drinking from a Quaich is a symbol of trust, friendship and love and most commonly used for marriage ceremonies. The bride and groom would take a drink of whisky from the cup. This was a symbol of love and for the life that the couple share together. It was also used to wet the baby’s head to toast the health of a newborn and the Quaich’s became a popular choice as a wedding gift. The trust element of the cup exists in the relationship between the giver and the receiver.
